Stadtwerke Tübingen sustainably supplies southwestern Germany’s university city of Tübingen and its region with electricity, natural gas, heat, drinking water, telecommunications, public transport, e-mobility, parking garages, public pools and much more. Bus transport in the city is organized via the public transport division TüBus.

Retrofit Project for the Digitalization of the Bus Fleet
A total of 67 buses are in operation for TüBus. In order to be able to provide its passengers with real-time information both at the bus stops and in the buses, Stadtwerke Tübingen launched a digitization project. In order for the onboard systems to meet the new, increased requirements, they had to be modernized in the course of a retrofit. The retrofit of the existing buses required the use of Ethernet switches.
The Right Decision Thanks to Advice Provided
During the preparations for their digitalization project, Stadtwerke Tübingen became aware of the E1 and ITxPT certified ROQSTAR Ethernet switches from TRONTEQ. During the project implementation, TRONTEQ also provided consulting support with regard to IP networks in buses. Afterwards, TüBus was able to optimize the network infrastructure requirements and make a decision on the appropriate Ethernet switch.
The ROQSTAR Switch “roqs” a Digitalization Project
Based on the project and network requirements, the choice fell on the ROQSTAR Managed Switch. Future functions such as the separation of subsystems by means of VLAN and the introduction of modern ticketing systems can thus be easily integrated into the network by changing the configuration of the switch. Unmanaged devices, on the other hand, would have had to be replaced with managed switches in this case. As a result, all public transport buses in Tübingen could be optimally equipped for their digital future right from the start.
With TRONTEQ, we found the ideal switch provider for our digitization project. They were able to understand our project exactly, explained the various options to us and showed us the advantages and disadvantages. The ROQSTAR managed switch we chose was delivered promptly and installed with absolutely no problems. We are extremely satisfied with the devices and happy that we have achieved our first goal: To reliably provide real-time traffic information to our TüBus passengers.
