Remote Network Management via OpenAPI

Sep 09, 2022

As more devices get connected to IP networks, availability is a key point. Public transport operators are interested in monitoring the network, especially its continued connectivity. Using an OpenAPI is a great way to achieve exactly this.

Content

Ethernet switches are ideal candidates for network monitoring. Since they connect all devices into a network, they play a central role regarding connectivity.

But what is a good way to get this kind of information remotely, and ideally combine it with other remote management tasks?
It should definitively allow the remote administration of many devices by way of automation, so a good integratability in management suites is part of the solution.

    What is an API?

In order to control devices this way, an API is needed. An API (Application Programming Interface) is a set of commands that programmers can use to interact with a system. There are many different APIs (Application Programming Interfaces); some proprietary by specific vendors, some more standardized.

    Why Choose an OpenAPI?

What makes an OpenAPI special are its features: it offers a vendor-neutral, portable and open specification for providing technical metadata for REST APIs.

Thanks to this standardized way to write API specification many tools have been developed that make the implementation quick and easy. Just by using the OpenAPI description, it is possible to automatically generate working code to communicate with OpenAPI-compatible devices. You can even try it out online.

ROQSTAR Managed Gigabit Ethernet Switches have an OpenAPI you can use to:

    • get status information

    • perform diagnostics and view log files

    • change the configuration

    • update the software.

ROQSTAR’s OpenAPI implementation adheres to the prevalent REST principles and uses HTTP(s), which is available in virtually any programming language. Thanks to our code examples and the detailed documentation of every command, it’s easy to both get started and follow through.

ROQSTAR Managed Ethernet Switches use the OpenAPI to provide a stable interface. The commands of the current version will stay the same and will remain available even in future versions. Thus, when you are updating in the future, there is no need to change your integration since compatibility is ensured.

We definitely recommend you to make use of these advantages of the ROQSTAR Managed Ethernet Switches.
